Getting Help

Being informed is the best way to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse! We provide free services to victims of sexual violence in Bolivia. If you are a survivor living in Bolivia and are looking for help, please visit this website for more information and directions to our center. You are not alone!

Children

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual violence, know that you are not alone. Tell someone who will listen and help you. It can be any trusted adult: a parent, guardian, family member, teacher, counselor, coach, minister, neighbor, the police, anyone you think will help. If that person does not believe you or doesn’t know what to do, tell someone else. Keep telling people until an adult helps you and makes you feel believed and safe. And remember this—violence is never the child’s fault. It is always the adults’ responsibility to protect the child. No one has the right to touch children in ways that make them feel uncomfortable. If it feels wrong, it probably is. You always have the right to say no.

Teens

If you are—or know of—a teenager who has experiences sexual violence, tell a trusted adult right away. If they don’t help you, tell someone else. And remember, you don’t have to go through this alone. A trusted parent, teacher, coach, school counselor, or other adult can help you find someone to talk to about this violence and anything else that may be troubling you.

Adults

There are a number of resources for survivors of child sexual violence. The Courage to Heal by Laura Davis and Ellen Bass is a wonderful and extensive book, geared primarily to women but also applicable to overall healing. It has recently been updated. If you are a parent looking for a good resource to help you speak with your child about sexual violence, we suggest a copy of the book, My Body Belongs to Me, by Jill Starishevsky (visit mybodybelongstome.com). If you suspect that a child is a victim of sexual violence, trust your gut. You could be the only person who takes action. 90% of children don’t tell that they have been victims of sexual violence. It is up to adults to recognize situations and behaviors that can make children venerable to abuse. It is the responsibility of adults to notice signs of sexual violence and take action. Remember If something makes you uncomfortable tell someone. Your voice may be the first and only hope for a child.
