Mary currently services as director at the Global Women's Institute at George Washington University.

She is an accomplished author with more than 30 years of experience in international research and program work focused on gender-based violence, methodological aspects of violence research, human rights, HIV, and HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

Dr. Ellsberg's deep connection to global gender issues stems not only from her academic work but also from living in Nicaragua for nearly 20 years leading public health and women's rights advocacy. Mary is an engaging and passionate person.

She has been a wonderful encouragement to A Breeze of Hope, helping it to make contacts in the D.C. area and providing advice on how to work in the area of global advocacy for victims of sexual violence.

Brisa De Angulo is passionate social activist for children's rights.

For the last 15 years, Brisa has worked with healthy childhood development, and for the last 12 years she has worked to prevent sexual violence against children and adolescents. She is a recognized expert in South America on the topic of child and adolescent sexual abuse and regularly works with attorneys, prosecutors, judges, psychologists, social workers, and police to improve their case management systems.

Brisa is also a well-known public speaker, having given workshops and conferences at several universities and non-profit organizations, both in the United States and abroad. Her public speaking focuses on the dynamics of sexual violence and the many traumatic consequences that result from it for the individual, the family, and society as a whole. Brisa is the author of a landmark study on sexual violence in Bolivia and co-author of several books on sexual violence, human rights, and early childhood development. Her academic work on sexual violence against female adolescents in Bolivia provided the framework for a thematic hearing presented to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in 2012.

Brisa is also co-founder of Comunidad Educativa Para La Vida, Centro Una Brisa de Esperanza (CUBE), Fundacion Una Brisa de Esperanza, and of A Breeze of Hope Foundation. Brisa received her Juris Doctorate from Rutgers Law School, her Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology from Towson University, and her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Eastern University.

Brisa De Angulo began her career as an activist and advocate for social justice at a very young age. Growing up in Cochabamba, Bolivia, she realized how badly children were treated in the public schools and told her parents that she wanted to create a better alternative. “Almost every day I saw young children leaving school with bruises,” Brisa says. “It was an accepted part of the education system for teachers to beat and severely punish students. I wanted this to change!” When she was just 14, Brisa set out to make that dream come true.

“My parents realized I was serious, and they helped out,” she says. With the help of government permission she founded Comunidad Educativa Para La Vida (Education Community for Life) in [year]. Today the school has more than 200 students and has become a model for similar enterprises. When she was sixteen, a member of her extended family began raping and torturing her. Brisa’s eyes were opened to the horrific underground world of sexual violence against children and adolescents.

After suffering tremendous pain and violence, two suicide attempts, and years of struggle to bring her perpetrator to justice, Brisa was determined to turn this horrible experience into a breeze of hope for others. In the summer of 2004 Brisa Founded Centro Una Brisa De Esperanza (CUBE), the first center in Bolivia that provides free comprehensive services to child and adolescent victims of sexual violence. Since then Brisa has dedicated her life to making the world a safer place for children.
